Good day to each and every-one of you, St Peter FC Academy players and parents.
I trust you are all keeping well and fit and managing to follow all the Government guidelines during these difficult times?
When you are essentially confined to your house for a long period you will be less active. It is essential as an athlete, to take regular exercise. We will be publishing some helpful routines to assist you to keep active and to build your body strength, concentrating on key muscles that are utilised in playing the game of football. If you engage with these routines on a regular daily basis they will not only keep your body in good shape but in many cases take you to a new level. When the time comes to re-commence our football programme, both you and your team, can steal a march on the opposition and get off to a flying start through your fitness alone.
The first of our publications are supplied by Gillingham FC Academy Head Bryan Bull.
This series of Strength and Conditioning exercises is currently being practised by all Gillingham’s young U15 players (all of whom are at home just like you).
These routines can, however, be adapted to other age groups by raising or lowering the number of sets you do of each exercise. For instance, 12 and 13-year-olds should restrict themselves to two sets and 16 to 18-year-olds increase it to 4 sets. It is important that you initially find a comfortable level in terms of numbers of sets and follow the instructions carefully in how to perform the exercise. No special equipment is required and any items used are all likely to be available in most households.
Remember to have a real positive effect, this should be a daily routine performed at approximately the same time each day. We hope to add new meaningful exercise programmes over the coming weeks.
Initially don’t overstretch yourself and stop if you feel any discomfort. If mums and dads wish to join the routine they should maybe just start at one set of each and build up when they feel ready.
