St Peter U18B v St Brelade U18B
Well, the start of a new season with majority of the squad of last season up for the new challenge of the under 18 B division up for grabs.
It was pleasing to see Josh Jehan, Calum Huckerby, Dan Le Perrel and Jack Moyes join the squad to play up an age group and they did not look out of place.
The team enjoyed a thorough warm up and we’re given exact positional advice to make us hard to break down but flexible and free to express ourselves playing football on the attack. What else would you expect from the coach – ‘Lister the voice’!!
Key words for this season are ‘Organised’ and ‘Disciplined’ and the boys will have these drummed into them over the season.
First half was underway and the boys didn’t disappoint. After only 6 minutes an expertly executed through ball from mid-field by Phil Quinn set the lively and pacy Elliott Stevens through for his first goal of the season and the day.
The boys looked in the mood and were very well disciplined in the formation for retaining the ball and playing good football. Dan and Phil in the centre of the park looked very domineering and controlled and St Brelade’s must have thought they should have stayed in bed this morning than face these two all day.
The next half an hour was an onslaught with St Peter controlling possession and threatening on many occasions.
St Brelade were resined to playing on the break as they couldn’t pass through our
2 banks of narrow 4 and 4 formation. On 40 minutes they managed to break away and after a lucky ricochet their forward found himself on a one on one with Josh.
Josh shot off his line and spread himself at the feet of the striker and pulled off a great save to keep us ahead.
Finally, all the pressure paid off with shot after shot with one of the shots hitting the hand of a defender. Elliott was the quickest I’d seen him all day to run to the penalty spot to demand the ball. As his confidence showed he dispatched it into the left corner for 2-0.
Straight from the kick off we pushed on and Harrison Cummins, who was looking masterful on the ball everytime he had it, played a Beckham-esque ball, splitting the St Brelade defence through to the lightening Elliott who slotted home calmly. 3-0
Max Friend and Josh we’re pushing our defence line up and the full backs Tom and Calum supported them well allowing the mid-field to shine up high.
Half Time and a satisfying and deserved 3-0 lead.
After half time the changes were made with the squad oozing talent, the subs had a run out.
Luke Rumbold in a like for like with swap with Tom and the crowd pleasing Kerr Fossey coming on for Jacques who had been pulling the strings in the number 10 role and Parrs ‘tear you apart’ Yukestel coming off for a rest being replaced by Mark Boarer.
Normal service resumed with Dan providing this time. Another beautiful ball played through into the channel to Elliott who ran on and slotted home for 4 for the team and 4 for himself.
The boys obviously relaxed thinking the game was over but this was too soon as after 15 mins St Brelade scrambled a sloppy goal back. 4-1
Nick Pearce now entered to fill in a midfield role to rest the impressive Phil.
We however pressed on to kill the game off and with acrobatic over head effort by Mark Boarer and great strikes from Kerr and Parrs the St Brelade keeper was having the game of his life – typical!!! Even when he couldn’t save it the inside of the cross bar denied Mark Boarer the 5th goal.
Just after their keeper saved a one on one and follow up from Elliott they broke away and scored their 3rd after Calum had tackled the forward but it fell nicely to their mid-field player who beat Josh with the shot. 4-3
Not quite ‘park the bus’ but the team had 15 minutes to hang on.
Some nice ‘corner flag’ skills by Phil and Parrs helped the refs watch count the minutes down.
4-3 win and the season starts on a high. Well done boys.
Man of the match (joint) Josh Jehan and Jack Moyes with Dan Le Perrel a close second.
Elliott was obviously in the running but as a defender myself I know the strikers always get the credit so I voted for the defenders today 🙂 Well done Elliott, lets have the golden boot this year……..
