Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls,
As we approach the start of a new season we have much to look forward to. Everyone’s appetite will have been whetted by the glorious festival of football that we were privileged to see on our television screens from the World Cup in Brazil.
Here at the St Peter FC Academy we aim to continue the consistent progress that we have achieved since the formation of the Academy and we feel confident that we can have a successful season. However our overriding objective is to continue to nurture and develop the exciting talent that is emerging throughout the various age groups.
One important announcement is to inform you that we will have a new Director of Coaching for the start of the new season. Rob Cameron has held this position since the formation of the Academy and has done a brilliant job in bringing together and leading a really first class coaching team. Rob is now managing the Clubs senior team in addition to his responsibilities at the Centre of Excellence and will be standing down from his Academy duties. On behalf of everyone associated with the Academy, I thank Rob for all that he has done to lay the firm foundations that we now have in place and to extend our best wishes to him and the first team for a successful season ahead.
I am delighted to inform you that Gary Freeman has been appointed to this position and I am confident that this will ensure that the momentum of improvement and rising standards established by Rob will be continued.
Gary is a unique and fantastic character. He has played at the highest levels for St Peter’s for some 21 years and will continue as a key member of the first team squad in the season ahead. Gary has played on numerous occasions for the Island team and is the most prolific goalscorer in Jersey football. He has been coaching for some time and for the past two seasons has managed and coached our under 18 team bringing through a number of our current first team squad.
If our youngsters are seeking a role model, look no further than Gary. Anyone who has performed so consistently at the highest level for 21 years certainly knows how to train , to keep himself in peak condition and clearly knows how to follow a nutritious and appropriate diet. Above all he has retained a desire to compete and to enjoy the game to the full, always playing in the right spirit.
Gary will be announcing his coaching support structure shortly. I am sure you will join with me in wishing Gary every success with his new responsibilities
The coaching experience that the St Peter FC Academy now has at its disposal is undeniable. In addition to the team coaches we will continue to enjoy the services of Scott Walsh as fitness and conditioning coach and I am delighted to inform you that Colin Pack, an experienced goalkeeping coach, will have responsibility for the development of all the Academy’s promising young keepers.
We have a number of very talented youngsters across the various age groups and our challenge is to continue to develop their abilities. We want all of our young players to continue to enjoy their football and to remember the 5 principles that are at the heart of the Academy ——Respect, Enjoyment, Sportsmanship, Discipline and Teamwork. If you really want to develop your talents as a footballer, listen to your coaches and take on board the advice of our fitness and conditioning coach.
This season whilst retaining the ethics I have just referred to, in the age groups 14 and above, we will be aiming to introduce a competitive edge. Playing the game in the right spirit but playing to win.
We will also be aiming to provide off Island opportunities for some of our teams to test their abilities against mainland teams. We will also hope to continue with our policy of inviting professional coaches to run master classes with as many of our age groups as possible.
I would sincerely like to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support particularly our lead Academy Sponsor the Sanne Group, together with Jacksons, Sandpiper and Power Protection Security Ltd. Without their generous support we would not be able to be able to provide either the standard or the breadth of activities that we currently enjoy.
To you the players and parents thank you for all the support you give us. I wish you an enjoyable and successful season ahead. Remember the adage that the more you put into anything the more you get out! Our reputation is very important, whatever the disappointments or frustrations please always treat the officials and opponents with respect
Good luck and best wishes to you all
