Match Report : St Peter U16 v St Clement 15th November
On the back of being robbed of a well deserved victory against St Brelades, the U16 where determined to win the game against St Clements, for many of the team, the game was their first time outing on the new pitch at Springfield.
As if this occasion was not large enough the match was attended by Darren Hare of Gillingham FC, Darren agreed to give the lads a pre-match talk and offered a few points of salient advise. It was up to the lads now.
St Peter from the start dominated large parts of the play and were under no illusion as to what was expected of them. As has been the case with so many of our performances this year we were treated to a football that did not want to find its way into the opposition goal. The break through finally came with an intelligent pass from Sol Solomon which was dispatched with aplomb by Elliot Stephens, Elliot held his line better this game and was able to avoid the off side trap. St Peters defence was well marshalled by Stephen and Johnny and there were some great overlapping runs between Calum and Jo Jo. The second goal came just before the second half from Sol after St Clements failed to clear a ball that was driven in from the wing.
Darren Hare gave a half time team talk and was pleased that the lads had made a determined effort to take on board his pre-match advice. The key to the game was now going to be which team would get the third goal, with Elliot and Sol coming in for some praise.
In the first five minutes of the second half St Clements had an opportunity gifted to them by a poorly weighted pass out of defence to the middle of the park, this was seized on by St Clements and much to the teams relief the shot whistled wide of the left upright with the keeper beaten, that was a warning not to get complacent.
After that moment the lads lifted their game, the substitutions had Parrs attacking the left hand side getting around the back and giving their right back a torrid time having been fed some lovely balls by Phil. It was only a matter of time until the next goal came, this was dispatched across the keeper in to the left hand corner by Sol. After the third goal St Clements heads appeared to drop, Stephen was replaced by Dan, who really can play anywhere you ask and always puts in a solid performance and plays with a smile on his face.
The fourth goal came from Jacques from the right hand side who had made some very intelligent runs and stood up to some very aggressive football from St Clements that saw him dispatched to the floor on several occasions. The fifth and final goal falling to Charlie Robinson. St Clements just backed off gave him space outside the box and there was only ever going to be one results, sure enough Charlie did not disappoint and unleashed a rocket of a shot into the top left hand corner, get your hair cut Charlie.
It was a very pleasant Sunday morning enjoyed by all the coaches, parents (unless you were a St Clements parent – one however did pass comment that St Peters played some very nice football and we clearly have some good players). Brian Foulser, Charlie Daze and Darren Hare thoroughly enjoyed the game and were delighted with the commitment and the standard of football. The team put in the performance they have been threatening to do all season, well done lads, two players who stood out to the coaches throughout the whole match for determination and quality of play where Phil Quinn (who kept the middle of the park ticking – he was also was singled out by Darren) and Calum (who refused to be passed by any St Clements player) now keep it going. Next match St Clements in the cup.
