St Peter FC Academy is delighted to announce that Rui Marques has been appointed as Head Coach of the Junior section of St Peter FC. Marques takes up his responsibilities with immediate effect even though a date for the return of football to the Island has still to be agreed.
Rui has a wealth of coaching experience and has enjoyed a great deal of success, particularly in his time with St Peter. In 2018/19 he managed and coached the U18 squad who swept all before them winning every single game they played in the Channel Islands, League Champions two cups and the Channel Island Trophy when they comprehensively beat St Martin AC, the Guernsey League Champions for the Portsmouth Trophy. In a pre-season tour, they defeated 3 top junior teams of professional or semi-professional clubs, including Gillingham FC U18’s.
From 64 starting teams in the Kent FA U18 County Cup, they battled through 4 rounds before losing narrowly to Folkestone Invicta in the Semi-Final. Rui Marques went on to manage the St Peter FC first team during the 2019/20 season and did an outstanding job in the most difficult circumstances.
Youth players were given their opportunity and seized their chance to provide the Club with an exciting and promising future. For personal reasons, Rui decided to stand down from his first-team role and he now wishes to return to his passion for being involved in the development of young players. Marques has very clear ideas on the structure and coordinated planning that is required to bring out the best in young players and enhance their natural talents.
St Peter Academy Chairman, Brian Foulser said
“we are absolutely delighted to have such a talented coach to Head up our Academy, I know he is committed to taking a fresh look at the way we approach the development of young players, together with providing the necessary support that is required for the coaching team. He knows it is essential a coach enjoys the role and feels they are supported, to enable them to become even more effective. I am excited about the future and look forward to once again working with an outstanding coach.”
An enthusiastic Marques said,
“I am delighted to be taking up the position of Head Coach of the Academy and I am grateful for the opportunity the Club has offered me. Developing our young
players are something I am extremely passionate about and by having a significant impact as to how the Club approaches player development is an exciting new challenge and one I consider a privilege.
With the help of the outstanding coaches within the Academy, the aim is to build on what is already an excellent youth set up. The foundation of our aims will be to give our young players a holistic football ‘education’ while also teaching them the St Peter values, Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship, it’s a challenge I relish.”
The club has already announced their new 1st X1 management team, headed by Elliot Powell along with Dan Garton, Gary Powell and Paul Brannan. They bring a refreshing appetite to the task, with a mixture of youth, experience and proven coaching skills.
This has been a challenging and frustrating season for all clubs for several reasons, not least the abruptness at which the season concluded in an unfinished state. The appointment of Marques and the new 1st team management gives the St Peter Club tremendous optimism for the future. Commenting on his appointment, Elliott Powell said
“I’m delighted to accept the position as first-team Manager at St Peter. It’s a club with a rich history and I am honoured and proud that the committee has entrusted my coaching team and me with this responsibility. The infrastructure and ambition of the club was an opportunity that we simply could not turn down, we can’t wait to get started.”
