St Peter FC U18 Team finally get their chance to make History.

The long-awaited semi-final of the Kent FA County Cup Tournament against Isthmian League Club Faversham Town FC’s Academy squad has been confirmed for Sunday the 16th May KO 10-30am.

If they were to be successful St Peter would be the first Jersey Junior Club side to reach an English FA County Cup Final.

Following their quarter-final victory against the tournament favourites, Sevenoaks Town FC in February 2020, St Peter FC have had to wait over a year for their chance to complete the tournament. The Kent FA cancelled all their County Cup competitions for 2020/21 but have shown a determination to complete the 2019/20 seasons tournament that was at the Semi-Final stage when COVID-19 intervened.

The Final will take place at Chatham Town FC’s Stadium on the 30th of May. Having fought through 4 rounds of a very tough draw, the team are excited to finally have their opportunity to put Jersey and St Peters FC on the English Football map by doing their utmost to win this prestigious County Cup Competition.

The Kent and English FA’s have decreed that any player who started the tournament and featured in at least one game is eligible to complete it, even if they are now past their 18th birthday. Joint U18 Coach, Anthony Lister said

“It’s a bit like the curate’s egg. We feel it is only fair to the lads from both teams who battled to get their Clubs to this stage of the competition that they are allowed to complete the task. However, with a number of those players now in their first year at University and the restricted travel sources available, it is proving a major logistical task to assemble and organise the squad. A number of our players have recently enjoyed a break from their studies and have featured for the St Peter Club so we can see their fitness levels are good. We are taking 16 players to the game including some U16’s who have featured regularly for the U18’s this season. It’s a good mix of seasoned performers and exciting new talent emerging.”

St Peter FC have entered this competition in two consecutive seasons and in 2018/19 were knocked out at the semi-final stage in a close game by the eventual winners, Folkestone Invicta, so they are determined to go at least one stage further this time.

All games have to be played in Kent so all 9 games played to date have been played on the opponents home grounds with travel involving dawn starts from home. This particular visit is impacted by the lack of convenient flights as there is no morning flight on the Sunday to Gatwick the team were intending to travel on Saturday only for the only flight to be cancelled. The remaining route left open is to fly to Southampton on the Saturday and coach down to Kent, stay overnight for an early morning KO, to allow them to return on the only flight back to Jersey from Gatwick, which departs at 16-30pm.

Coach Karl Benest said,

“The lads will take all this in their stride, they see this tournament as testing themselves against some of the best teams in the south of England.
If we can come back with a result, they can be very proud of their achievement as the constant unavoidable on off of this particular game, together with the tiring and difficult travel involved on this occasion, means this is a very tough ask. We have had a lot of success over the past 5 or 6 years but this is our biggest match to date. We were hoping to secure a sponsor for this fixture and the Final if we make it through, to relieve the burden on the players and the Club but to date that hasn’t been possible”
