The Under 16’s successful season continued with victory in the Eric Amy Cup semi final. In a hard fought match from start to finish we finally secured victory winning 5-4 on penalties.
Never reaching the following football of some of their previous matches our Under 16 League champions nevertheless rolled up their sleeves and battled to the end. After a goal less first have Grouville took the lead some 15 minutes into the second half. Not for the first time we were caught in possession in a congested midfield and a direct long ball caught out the defence and the Grouville striker lifted the ball over the advancing Ciaran Pack.
The game continued to be evenly fought and with time running out we conjured up an equaliser. From a corner on our right with some 3 or 4 minutes left a flick on was stabbed home from close range by the tireless Jack Burt.
We almost won the game in the dying seconds as Jodie Byrne wriggled free of his markers crossed along the goal line, this eluded a couple of advancing attackers and hit the inside of the post.
So to extra time and we were definitely the team now in control dominating for most of the additional 20 mins but without being able to find that winning goal.
The lottery of the penalty shoot out followed and both teams can be commended for the quality shown, 4-4 after the first five and on to sudden death, Grouville, going first and a tremendous save by “Packy” who had had a commanding performance in goal left it up to Jack Burt to calmly slot home the winning penalty. Joyful celebrations followed and the boys can now look forward to an exciting last three weeks of the season.
