Under 13’s A up for the cup

Road to Springfield’ – Sunday 27th November

St Peter A 3-2 St Brelade

What a way to start our Cup run with a local ‘West side’

We knew St Brelade would raise their game, as they always do against us, but with this being a cup tie this was double the reason.

A stern team talk before kick off told the boys that our usual slow start couldn’t happen today – well I might as well have ‘copy & pasted’ the last 2 game reports as yes, we started more like a Sunday pre-season warm up than a clash of the Western rivals!!

The first 10 minutes was up and down with no real control from either team. St Brelade used their height and grit as normal with no real threat of skill but it stopped us getting into a nice routine.

However, Luke and Dany were teaming up nicely and our opener saw Luke play Danny through from midfield and Danny’s trusty hot left peg hit the top corner, GOAL! 1-0.

Luke playing in his new favourite role of a free centre mid position and his ‘titanic engine’ didn’t disappoint all day.

Josh Brown retained his CDM role after a joint MOM performance against Grouville 2 weeks ago and Josh carried on from where he left off and he was tiresome in his closing down play all game. A dogged Nobby Stiles but with more teeth (and better looking may I say Mr & Mrs Brown).

Josh got on the ball quickly and thread another ball through to the dangerous Danny but Danny’s shot was blocked on its way into the corner. Unlucky.

Luke’s second through ball a minute later saw Danny hit the side net. Don’t worry, Danny will be back later……

More toing and froing until in the 28th minute St Brelade’s striker found himself on the edge of our box and quick feet and back foot defending saw him through and a shot beat our Island keeper Joe ‘the cat’ 1-1.

Cianan & Byron at full backs were in the game more and more stopping the long balls and having to be strong with a physical presence of a rotating St Brelade attack line. They worked hard and battled harder.

Now Josh ‘Duracell’ Stuart was getting into the game, playing on the left side of mid-field and he didn’t disappoint. Despite playing rugby this morning Josh has a enormous set of lungs, heart & desire for a cup game (and any game as a matter of fact) and he ploughed through this time and came close meeting a cross from Luke.

Not to worry one minute later, Danny broke away down the wing flew past the full back with ease and crossed beautifully for Luke’s late mid-field run into the box and there was only one result, GOAL! 2-1

After the half an hour and for the second time in a row we had a ‘non penalty’ given against us. Horrific decision as again Malo ‘Bolt’
Le Brun had the pace to get back at the Striker bearing down on goal and made a great tackle….but no ref saw it as a pen!!

Not to worry, we have Joe ‘the cat but now renamed Kangaroo’ Harrington in goals and his well known penalty heroics didn’t disappoint again and he flew across his line to pull off a great save. Match saver Joe 🙂 Jersey’s U14 numer one.

Just before half time the thread of Danny shooting just wide after Harry put him through and Luke shooting wide from distance should have had us 3 or 4 up.

Half time and super subs Patrick G and Josh A came in to add freshness to our defence.

Normal service resumed with Danny again looking dangerous with a shot just wide and one saved by fingertips. He could have had a double hat-trick on another day.

Harry and both Josh’s were being strong in the tackle with Thomas Rowland’s not seeing much of the ball early on making sure he was up and down supporting the hard working mid-field.

After 11 minutes our defence was caught pressed too high and a chance ball over the top beat Malo’s pace and the chip just passed Joe 2-2.

Thomas was now getting involved by coming in field and went close with a hard shot on goal. Harry was also battling hard around the edge of the St Brelade box but just couldn’t find space to unleash his ferocious shot.

We were pressing hard now and Luke had another shot saved with the follow up cleared off the line and Danny had another effort saved and side net respectively.

After 25 minutes Danny went on a run from deep beating 1 then 2 then 3, 4 and 5 is there any more defenders left then he crossed to an unmarked Luke in the box but his foot was 2 inches from netting our 3rd – Gascoigne moment.

Then it came as it was deserved. Harry & Josh B hunted the ball in mid-field and Luke picked up the scraps and fed Danny, only one result with Danny bearing down on goal and that was a GOAL 3-2

The game became scrappy with the end nearing. Our defence was fighting for everything with Malo and Josh A challenging for everything. Max back on at left back to use his trusty left peg to send the ball down the line and Patrick on the right to tighten up the offsides.

Final Whistle and we are in the hat for the next round.

Thanks to all supporters as always and of course the boys for their determination and hard work, everyone one of them. This was a team game and they fought for each another to get through.
